No. A UK (imperial) gallon = 4.546 litres; a US gallon = 3.785 litres — about 20% smaller. UK fuel economy (mpg) uses imperial gallons, so a UK "40 mpg" is better than a US "40 mpg". Never mix them up.
Why is a UK pint bigger than a US pint?
A UK pint = 568 ml (20 fl oz); a US pint = 473 ml (16 fl oz). This is why a pint of beer in a British pub feels generous — it genuinely is bigger than the American version.
